OUR MISSION

The mission of Monterey Bay Power Over Parkinson’s is to enhance the lives of those in the local community affected by Parkinson’s disease by providing a research-backed program proven to slow disease progression in an environment that embraces empowerment, motivation and social interaction.

ABOUT US
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Over a million Americans live with Parkinson's disease (PD) with over 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year.  This is more than the combined number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease - with Parkinson's as the most common neurodegenerative disorder following Alzheimer's.  The actual number of individuals in Monterey County diagnosed with PD is difficult to determine, however, based on the County's population statistics, the estimated number of patients diagnosed with PD is well over 1,500.

A diagnosis of PD is life changing but there is much that can be done in terms of incorporating daily exercise and disease-specific modalities that are proven to help with symptom management.  Research has validated that certain movement exercises can improve gait, balance, tremor, flexibility, grip strength and motor coordination.

Following an assessment of local resources available to individuals diagnosed with PD, it became clear that Monterey County lacked consistent, long-term movement-based programs to support ongoing PD symptom management. The absence of accessible local options meant that many individuals were forced to travel several hours each week to attend Parkinson’s-specific exercise classes outside of Monterey County.

Power Over Parkinson’s was established in 2017 to address this critical gap—bringing high-quality, targeted programming to our local community and helping individuals with Parkinson’s manage symptoms, maintain physical function and stay connected close to home.
